Behind the Wizard Inn is the Church Quarry which became the home of a hermit called John Evans (1883 -1933). He was probably an early volunteer warden and he made records about the mines while planting many trees [12]. He built a log cabin in front of the small cave which he may have used as a larder. People who walked past the quarry took great delight in his garden but opinions about John Evans were divided. Those who met John said that he was a thoroughly nice man but he was also said to be a woman hater by others. John Evans died in 1933 but it is not known whether he committed suicide or was murdered. Today the only remains of the cabin are a few flagstones and a drainage ditch. John Evans' garden has also largely disappeared with only a few stone terraces marking the spot [12].
