Park up in the lay-by and follow the path which runs next to the field on the same side of the road. Carry straight on when the path forks to the right and walk down the steps. Turn left and follow the path which passes an overhang of rock with some blocks on the floor. Keep going until round a bend on your left is a rock face with a deep gash. On the ceiling of the gash is a reptile footprint although I haven’t found it yet. Keep going along the path for a few more yards until you reach the Wizard’s Well on your left.

Now turn around and backtrack until you come to the overhang of rock with the blocks on the floor. Just after this take the steps to the right which you came down earlier and then take the path to the left a few yards further on which leads to Castle Rock. Please take care around the edge of Castle Rock. Once you have finished admiring the view turn around and take the path on the left (which hugs the field). At the end of this path turn left and then right a few yards further along down the path with some steps. This path leads you past the Wishing Well and the Holy Well. When you reach the T-junction at the end of the path turn left and follow the path up to Stormy Point and the Devil's Grave. Face the view and then turn around. Take the flat path to your left with the wheelchair marker which takes you past the Druid's Circle. Keep to the right just after the Druid's Circle and follow the path to the end.

The path brings you to the Beacon and you should turn left and almost immediately left again. Follow this path until you reach a crossroads. Turn right and follow this path which brings you to Beacon Lodge and the Macclesfield Road. Cross this road taking great care and enter the woods via the path opposite. Follow this path a short way until you reach the sandy clearing known as the Hagg. Walk straight across the clearing and continue walking along the path until it forks after a short way. Take the right fork and look out for an indistinct path at right angles to the current path (you should also be able to see the field, a covered shaft and a broken tree trunk).

Take this path walking towards the field and then take the steps to your left. Wood Mine is located at the bottom of the steps and the DCC organise trips down this mine. Walk along the path with the reasonably high banks on either side until the banks disappear. Walk on a few more metres until a clear path cuts across the path you are on in a clearing. Turn right and walk along this path until you come to a gate. Do not pass through the gate but take the path that bends to the right instead.

Follow this path all the way to the style. Climb over the style and carry on straight ahead hugging the hedge on your right. When you are about halfway across the field turn around and you can see the Welsh Hills on a clear day. Turn around again and follow the field to the road and your car.
