The Hagg is a sandy clearing in the middle of Windmill Wood (fig. 1) and is where the ore was crushed by a windmill (hence the name of the wood). A smelting house and steam engine was constructed when the windmill became inefficient and the toxins produced by this process are responsible for the lack of vegetation [13]. It is possible that the Hagg was the source of wood for the smelter at Saddlebole during the 1690s but this is speculative [2].
